Five things you should be doing to live longer
What if you only had one wish? Wouldn’t you choose a long and healthy life? Imagine extending your lifespan by a decade! Want to live longer and healthier? Start following these five habits today.
1. Opt for veggie-driven, plant-based recipes
Nuts, whole grains, seeds, fruits, and vegetables may reduce the risk of common infections and enhance your life expectancy. Some of the healthiest people on the planet adhere to Mediterranean-style diets, which are filled with nourishing oils, greens, and complex carbs. These options pack plenty of fibre, minerals, and antioxidants.
Avoid the Western diet that is often loaded with red meats and excess calories. Unhealthy carbohydrates, full-fat dairy products, and processed foodstuffs are linked to lifestyle diseases and premature ageing. But alternative meal plans like vegan diets can reduce the risk of diabetes type II, heart disease, obesity, and certain cancers.
2. Manage your stress levels
Got a flat tyre in the middle of nowhere and have no spare? A loved one needs advanced medical attention, but you’ve run out of finances? During a crisis, your heart rate increases, and blood pressure intensifies. These frustrations can take a heavy toll on your mental health if you don’t know how to manage anxiety.
Anxiety can escalate into chronic stress and bring more complications like stomach ulcers, hypertension, depression, and stroke. No matter what you’re going through, learn how to cope with the unexpected. Socialise, meditate, and try deep breathing techniques.
3. Stay physically active
Do not let a day pass without completing at least 30 minutes of physical activity. You don’t have to set aside half an hour each day. How about breaking down a workout routine into 10-minute bouts of moderate to high-intensity exercises? Jog in the morning, stroll after lunch and stretch in the evening.
Consistency is the key. Working out every day also improves sleep quality, and you will feel more energised the following day. Consider joining Bootcamp UK for exciting outdoor sessions. You’ll achieve your wellness goals faster by working with a fitness coach.
4. Keep a healthy BMI
Did you know there’s more to health and wellness than just losing weight? Keep in mind that the Basal Metabolic Index (BMI) is paramount in your pursuit of a shredded, slim figure. Being underweight can be just as risky as obesity. You are underweight if your BMI is below 18.5 and are more likely to develop infertility, bone loss, low immunity, and teeth problems.
I’m not advocating for weight gain, but you need to maintain lean mass. Normal weight or a healthy BMI falls between 19 and 25. BMI of 25 – 30 is considered overweight, and above 30 is being obese. The consequences of obesity range from high cholesterol, diabetes and gallbladder diseases, among others. Manage your weight through healthy eating and regular exercise.
5. Say no to alcohol and tobacco
Drinking more than seven units of alcohol in a single session is dangerous. Binge drinking may lead to poor eyesight and acute alcohol poisoning, while long-term alcohol abuse is associated with liver cirrhosis, gastric problems, and cognitive decline. Smoking cigarettes is terrible for your lungs, given that they contain over 400 toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde, tar, and carbon monoxide. Continuous alcohol and tobacco use can contribute to traumatic death, injuries, chronic liver disease, and cancer. Avoid both substances if you want to prolong your life expectancy.
