

If I join up at Bootcamp UK, will I lose weight?
This is a question we get asked a lot, and the answer is almost certainly yes….but also, perhaps no.
The term “weight loss” is bandied about by many diets and eating plan books, social media influencers selling skinny drinks. Sandra, you used to go to school with who now wants you to join her juice cleanse group and every other Tom, Dick and Harry who wish to take your money to help you see those numbers drop on the scales. Promising a miracle but more often than not leaving you frustrated, discouraged and feeling like a failure.

Let’s look at the following options:
a) You see the dial on your scales move backwards and your weight drop, but you look essentially the same as before. You don’t feel much different in yourself – in fact, your new diet is so boring and restrictive that you’re tired all the time and ready to bin it off after a week!
b) You weigh a similar amount (give or take a few pounds). Still, you can fit into clothes you thought you never could; your confidence soars as you notice people giving you double takes down the pub. You find you can keep up with your kids (or grandkids) as they run around the field with a football.

Weight is, to be reductive, literally how heavy you are. It encompasses all you physically exist as – water, fat, bones, air and all the squishy bits in between. Your weight does not, in its simplest term, reflect your health or fitness. That is to say, how able you are to cope with life’s daily movement demands without injuring yourself. Strength, speed, flexibility and the like, or how likely you are to ward off conditions such as heart disease, high cholesterol or diabetes.
Slimming Clubs
Whilst slimming clubs run by Janet down at the community centre can be influential, many people benefit from them. The weight you might lose will be a combination of fat, muscle mass and water. You’ll see the numbers on the scales drop, but what you won’t see is an improvement in things like muscle tone, muscle definition or cardiovascular output. We all want our flabby bits to be a bit less, well, flabby, don’t we? And to be honest, given the option, I’m confident most of us would prefer to feel better and more active. Instead of feeling like a slave to Janet’s scales and treating one finger of a Kit-Kat as a wild night’s snacking.
Good Nutrition
Good nutrition incorporates all the things your body needs (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fruits/veggies) AND a solid increase in activity weekly. The increased activity involves weight-bearing exercise as well as cardio. Get this right, and you’ll start to reduce your body fat whilst simultaneously maintaining and/or building lean muscle.
Lean Muscle
Get it out of your head that lifting weights will make you bulky – that’s not the case (and actually, building muscles is tricker than you might think). Having lean muscle will give you that “toned” look, but here’s the added magic – the more lean muscle you have, the quicker your body burns fat, even at rest!! Burning calories whilst watching a movie, anyone?

Increase Your Weekly Activity
So, when you join us at Bootcamp UK, you’ll increase your weekly activity. Chucking barrels about, wiping mud off your face and having a laugh with the rest of the group as you collectively hate burpees. You may not see a dramatic change on your scales to start with. However, start thinking a little more about what goes into your mouth when you’re not at Bootcamp AND start to really enjoy your sessions with us. You might begin to notice some other excellent indicators that you’re moving in the right direction.
The Results
Are your clothes feeling looser? Have you dropped a dress or shirt collar size? Are the leggings you bought to start off with now getting on your nerves because they keep falling down? Try and be guided by your body shape changes rather than what the scales tell you – they only tell a portion of the story.
And for god sake, eat the whole Kit-Kat and tell Janet to get in the sea.
