Bootcamp UK Medway – Short Term Fix Vs Long Term Habitual Change
This is no real match up, is it??
In today’s society, we crave a quick and easy fix. There’s always a corner-cutting way to achieve what you want – but does it give you long term change and benefit?
The Yo-Yo Diet
Welcome to the yo-yo dieter and exerciser!
These expressions below are perfect evidence of this type of person, sadly:
‘I’ve been on a cleansing and reset diet with juices and shakes as supplements’
‘I’m doing a 5 weeks shred training programme.’
‘I’ve been on a calorie deficit diet.’
‘I only eat carbs before 6 pm.’
All of these statements (and more) are regularly heard from many people.
FACT – it will work short term to implement any of these strategies. You will lose weight etc., BUT can you maintain it?

The Longer Term
How long has it taken for you to get to this place of feeling out of shape, overweight and low on self-esteem?
Generally, people have relatively sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles for extended periods. They then have a sudden realisation from an individual incident or series of events that I’ve got to do something about this.
This is followed by a swift action and affirmation that ‘I’m gonna commit to this’.
The Easy Fix
I introduce you to the yo-yo dieter and exerciser. The yo-yo er goes into and out of cycles of activity, and healthy living and their weight and happiness are intrinsically linked to this and therefore go up and down with it.
There are generally plenty of negative behaviours that have occurred over a long period that need adjusting. Yo-yoers have been on the cycle for many years and have tried everything to change.

Why do people get so easily influenced by this yo-yo aspect?
It’s simple – the bright lights and promise of results in short term periods. These types of fad diet and exercise phenomena will produce some results for sure because you’ve been doing nothing and eating unhealthily for such a period of time. 🤔 Any changes here will spark instant results. However, now ask yourself how you continue to maintain and improve those factors. This is where it all falls apart.
With fad and yo-yo diets, you’re regularly looking to reduce/increase certain essential food types or treat some foods as bad foods. Mentally it’s tiring and difficult to stay on track. You can maintain your focus for some time, but at some point, that loss of nutrients will catch up to you, and you will crave that food type. Sustaining the changes is always impossible as your body often needs those nutrients for regular functions to occur.
Many people get bored quickly and turn away from exercise at the slightest issue (tired, injured, too late in the day, a friend isn’t going, haven’t got the energy, the mind is on other things). These are the times when you need your autopilot mode to push you into something for your own benefit. Make a commitment and stay for the long haul because you lose it if you don’t use it!
Results won’t happen instantly, but over time with a consistent and positive approach, they will. It’s all about making a lifestyle commitment rather than treating it as a chore.
